EP 01: Start Learning Arabic from Zero! (The Ultimate Beginner's Guide)
Welcome to all language enthusiasts and future Arabic speakers!
Are you ready to take your very first steps into the beautiful world of the Arabic language? Today, we are laying down the foundation. In this lesson, you will learn how to point to objects around you using the demonstrative pronoun (هَذَا - This), expand your basic vocabulary, and master simple question-and-answer structures.
1- هَذَا is pronounced hādhā, but it is written without the first alif. 2- Arabic has no word corresponding to the English “is”, i.e. Arabic has no copula. 3- There is no word in Arabic corresponding to “a” in English as in “this is a book”. The n-sound at the end of the Arabic noun (kitābu-n, baitu-n, masjidu-n) is the Arabic indefinite article corresponding to the English “a” / “an”. This n-sound is called tanwīn. 4- The particle أَ placed at the beginning of a statement turns it into a question, e.g.,

هَذَا بَيْتٌ Hādhā baytun This is a house. هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ Hādhā masjidun This is a mosque. هَذَا بَابٌ Hādhā bābun This is a door. هَذَا كِتَابٌ Hādhā kitābun This is a book. هَذَا قَلَمٌ Hādhā qalamun This is a pen. هَذَا مِفْتَاحٌ Hādhā miftāhun This is a key. هَذَا مَكْتَبٌ Hādhā maktabun This is an office/desk. هَذَا سَرِيرٌ Hādhā sarīrun This is a bed. هَذَا كُرْسِيٌّ Hādhā kursiyyun This is a chair. هَذَا قَمِيصٌ Hādhā qamīsun This is a shirt. هَذَا نَجْمٌ Hādhā najmun This is a star.
Part 2: Asking and Answering Questions
Now, let’s upgrade your skills from standalone words to basic conversational patterns. There are two main ways to ask questions in this lesson:
1) Asking "What is this?" using (مَا هَذَا؟)

1) Asking "What is this?" |  Q: مَا هَذَا؟ 💬 A: هَذَا بَيْتٌ. | Q: Mā hādhā? A: Hādhā baytun. | Q: What is this? A: This is a house. |

2) Confirming (Yes/No) |  Q: أَهَذَا بَيْتٌ؟ 💬 A: نَعَمْ، هَذَا بَيْتٌ. | Q: A-hādhā baytun? A: Na'am, hādhā baytun. | Q: Is this a house? A: Yes, this is a house. |
 Q: أَهَذَا سَرِيرٌ؟ 💬 A: لَا، هَذَا كُرْسِيٌّ. | Q: A-hādhā sarīrun? A: Lā, hādhā kursiyyun. | Q: Is this a bed? A: No, this is a chair. |
